Future Day was selected to produce a placemaking mural at 140 Main Street on the new Museum and Archive Building, based on our design concepts! The committee’s evaluation of the bids they received can be viewed on the town site here.
OBJECTIVES stated by the Town of Wasaga Beach
The objective stated by the Town of Wasaga Beach in their request for proposals was to assist in the placemaking and beautification of the Wasaga Beach downtown with positive and optimistic imagery that contributes to the “sense of place” that is unique to Wasaga Beach.
They further stated that: “the concept of the artwork should embrace Wasaga Beach’s culture, history, and overall brand. The mural should foster connections among people and across cultures. The art should have an interactive element thatencourages resident and visitors to be photographed in front the mural.”
Future Day’s Approach
In order to touch on Wasaga Beach both past and present and address the requirements as stated by the town, we incorporated a number of images and developed a collage.
We started with a backdrop landscape of the sun, the beach and a beautiful sand castle, merged with both the summer beach and winter snow tracks. We added some current popular activities via silhouettes and figures, such as paddleboarding, playing in the sand, cross country skiing, and blowing bubbles on the beach.
To add historical imagery, bubbles float throughout, showing key scenes from the past, such as the HMS Nancy, the first hotel, an indigenous person in a canoe, etc. which are iconic to Wasaga Beach. We also interspersed a couple of wildlife images associated with the area, the plovers and a monarch butterfly.
We made some minor adjustments to the design concepts prior to getting started. The following image represents the approved design. Note that some images used to produce the collage are photographs, some are sketches and the final product will not look exactly like this..
